“You can’t keep me locked up,” she said, trying not to squirm.
He finished with his sleeves then dropped his hands to his sides. His stance was so casual it was unnerving. It said that he absolutely could do whatever the hell he wanted. Not answering her, he righted the table by the bed and started to pick up the mess.
“Perhaps, you would like something else,” he said, still talking about the food.
“What I would like is to leave,” she repeated a little louder, “you can’t hide me here forever!”
Faster than she could have imagined, he set down the plate and moved in front of her until he was right up in her face. Kay dropped her head back to look up at him, trying hard not to give any ground. He was like one of those predators you didn’t want to spur into action by running.
“I’m afraid I can Miss Laurens,” his deep voice rumbled. He was so close that she could feel the vibration.
The finality of his words was horrifying. He was right too. Who back home would even realize she was missing? Cindy and Marley maybe…eventually. Anyone else would think she’d just gotten a wild hair and left. Even Esmé didn’t know her well enough to think any different. She hadn't realized how alone she was.
He loomed over her, leaving practically no space between them. His clean spicy scent invaded her nostrils again, making her lightheaded. His eyes were so clear and deep; something in them sparked and she recognized it from her dream. It was desire, just like King Amphere.
“B-but why,” Kay tried again, losing the battle to keep her wits about her, “I promise I’m a nobody – totally inconsequential.
He lowered his head closer, catching her chin on his forefinger.
“I doubt that Miss Laurens,” he pressed his thumb over her lips then rubbed them in a downward motion, “I think, under the right circumstance, you could be very…” his mouth dipped closer to hers, “consequential.”
