“You have to promise me,” she gasped, “you have to promise you’ll look out for them, no matter what. Cindy, Kay, Shep, the Keepers—all of them. They’re the only family I’ve ever had. Take care of them.”
Her behavior became more erratic, her eyes wild and distressed. She was breaking the heart Adam didn’t think he had, and he didn’t know how to soothe her. He’d do anything—say anything—but he was afraid if he did, it would be a lie. He truly didn’t know if she could get better on her own.
“I promise, Marlowe, but there’s no need. You aren’t going anywhere.” He smiled then tried to lighten the mood. “And no matter how many times you tell me to, I’m never going to leave you alone anyway. So, there’s that.”
She didn’t smile back. She settled a bit though so he loosened his grip, smoothing the hair away from her eyes. But then she tensed again.
“And another thing,” she said, her eyes going completely dark. No fire lit behind them at all, just blackness stealing in like poisoned water. “Stop them.”
He knew exactly who she meant. Those pieces of human refuse from the back alley. He’d put a few thugs and criminals out of everyone’s misery in his time, but only when they got too close to his world. You walked a fine line as an immortal when it came to running interference.
His predicament was one of knowing. Much the same way the gods couldn’t visit the human world in all their divine glory for fear of it affecting free will, the choices he made concerning humans could be just as drastic. Just look what he’d done to Marlowe. He’d changed her DNA—despite any choice she might have had in the matter. How was that for disrupting free will?
Her eyeliner streaked down her face in watery trails. He brushed at the smudges on her cheekbones with his thumbs as he held her stare. She was a hellion this woman, a warrior like no mortal he’d ever seen. She’d struck a chord with him the moment she’d walked into his club, demanding things, challenging him—the biggest bad in this whole damn town. When he’d pulled her off the roof that night after she’d been bitten, then gone against the rules of the gods to save her life, he’d told himself it had been to keep the peace between the otherworld and the Time Keepers. Even then he’d known that wasn’t the truth.
Fuck. He’d fallen for her the very first night.
Now he looked into her altered eyes, feeling the heat from the fire behind them. Once again, it mirrored his own. Once again, it marked her as his.
“I promise.”
